Rakushiken was built for the sake of Gomizunoo's daughter Mitsuko-naishinno in 1668.
Rakushiken was possessed by Rinyuji temple from 1677 to 1885.
Kasumidana shelf of Kyakuden is famous for one of the three excellent decoration shelves in japan, Shugakuin-rikyuu Kasumidana, Katsura-rikyu Katsuradana and Daigoji Daigodatna.
 
 
Avenue of Akamatsu(Japanese umbrella pine)
This path was a narrow ridge between rice fields before 1980.
It was rebuilt into the avenue of Akamatsu so that an Imperial carriage can pass through.
   
 
 
Panorama of forked road
Here is a central position of Shugakuin-rikyu anda a branching point to each upper, middle and lower Villa.
Higashiyama mountains and Tanada (terraced paddy field) can be seen. So this country side scenery makes our mind calm.

One of the important factor of Gomizunoo's grand garden plan is to adopt conutry side scenery around the villa.。

Huge tree
Katsura-rikyu is mostly artificial but harmonized garden.
Shugakuin-rikyu remains a part of untouched nature.
This huge Japanes ceder is natural. Such big trees can't be seen in Katsura-rikyu.
   
 
Nakanootyaya garden
This garden is located west side of Kyakuden.
The natural scenery causes feeling like walking in the deep forest.
   
 
Kyakuden and pond
Even though just the gable of Kyakuden can be seen, the house and nature in this scene are harmonized at high level.

Oribe toro
Thick moss grows on the cap due to the humid environment in the shade of high trees.
Latin alphabet and image of Virgin Maria are carves on the square pillar.

There is not any water in the stream.
Flag stones can be seen on the bottom of stream.
   
 
Picture on the ceder door
This door connects northwest corner of Kyakudan with southeast corner of Rakushiken.
The picture of Yamahoko in Kyoto Gion festival was painted by Geki Kano in the early Edo Period.
   
 
Aboshi-no-rankan
Aboshi-no-rankan means handrail shaped like drying fish net.
   
 
Kasumidana shel
Kasumidana shelf of Kyakuden is famous for one of the three excellent decoration shelves in japan, Shugakuin-rikyuu Kasumidana, Katsura-rikyu Katsuradana and Daigoji Daigodatna.
Keyaki (zeikova) board is laid like trailing mist.
Gold powder is scatered on the wall like the shape of cloud.
   
 
Ichinoma
Blue and golden Checkered opattern can be seen on the lower part of Tokonoma and Husuma. It shows gorgeous atmosphere of Imperial Court.
   
 
Ninoma and Sannnoma
Sannnoma can be seen through Ninoma.
There are excellent pictures scattered golden powder on the Husuma and wall.
   
 
Koi-no-Sugitoe
Carp is painte on the Sugito(ceder door).
The legend of carp is handed dwon.
Since the carp escaped from the door every night, the net was drawn afterwrords.
It's amusing and ful of wit, because the net is broken at several places.
   
 
Entrance of Ichinoma
The color and shepe of stones show profound atmosphere.
   
 
South side of Kyakuden
The front is Ninoma the next is Ichinoma.
The features of Kyakuden are deep eaves and woody balcony.
The woody balcony mostly surrounds Kyakuden.
   
 
Scree
This scree is a border between Kyakuden and Rinkyuji temple.

   
 
Aboshi-no-rankan
Aboshi-no-rankan means handrail shaped like drying fish net.
   
 
Ishigaki(stone wall)
The height of Ishigaki is the same as defference in height between Kyakuden and Rakushiken.
   
 
Ichinoma
Cherry bkossam in Yoshino is painted on Tokonoma's wall.
This room is called Yoshino-no-ma.
Hengaku(name tablet) hung over Husuma is written "Rakushiken".
The calligraphy is attributed to Gomizunoo.

Rakushiken has a simple structure. It is composed by Kawarahuki(tile roof), Kokera hisasi(chips eaves) and reddish earth wall.
   
 
Kiku-no-mon(Imperial chrysanthemum Crest)
Kiku-no-mon is engraved on the edge round tile.
