Sudden superb view
Along the mountain path, trees shut out the view.
Gradually, the pond can be seen among the trees, and we are excited at the prospect of seeing next scenery.
After walking some meters, superb view opens up right hand suddenly. The sight is impresseive and exciting.
Shokintei, Amanohashidate, Suhama and Hamamichi can be seen all together.

  
 
 
 
Upper view of the stream
from the stone bridge
This stream stands for the Oui River, upstream of the Katsura River.
Tsudsumi no taki(Japanes Hand Drum Fall) is seen in the middle of the photo.
The scenery is designed on the model of natural river and valley.
  
 
 
 
Shokintei seen from Suhama
One of the best shots of Katsurarikyu
Suhama expresses typical Japanese shore and cape spreading round stones.
The garden lantern at the top of cape is called Misaki Toro (cape garden lantern). It symbolizes a lighthouse.

In Katsurarikkyu the architctures and garden are integrated successfully.
The four priciple elements of japanese garden, water, rock, vegetation and architecture, are entirely harmonized to a high degree.
This scenery symbolically manifests all of the garden techniques.
   
 
 
Ultimately elaborated scenery
All components in Katsurarikyu are elaboretely created.
The guests are impressed by new scenery at every some steps, especially the sight from Hamamichi.

 
 
Connection of Islands
After walking some steps from upper photo place, new impressive sight appears. Islands seem to be connected.
  
 
 
 
Flower blossom at the pond side
In early summer, blossoms of Iris family add beauty to the sight of pond side.

This Kakitsubata(Iris family) is called "Kumoi-no-Tsuru"(Crane in Cloud) which blooms at pond side by shokintei.
  
 
 
 
 
 
 
Superb view from Hamamichi Panorama 1
The scenery from Hamamichi is wonderful in whole angle of 180 degrees.
This panorama is composed of 4 or5 photos.
In order to taste further presence, the motion video is transformed from the panorama.

Panorama 2 is composed of other photos apart from panorama 1. The view is widrer than panorama 1.

This panorama is the view from near the top of the cape.
Misaki Toro and round stones can be seen at the lower right.

 
 
 
 
Shirakawabashi Bridge
Shirakawabashi Bridge
Length 6m, width 70cm, thickness 35cm
Great sized rock bridge
The material is mined in Shirakawa Kyoto.
  
 
 
 
Nijiriguchi of Chashitsu
After crossing Shirakawabashi, there is Nijiriguchi of Shokintei Chashitsu.
Sotokoshikake is a waiting room of this Chashitsu.
The path between two place seems long for the first time visiters, but wonderful sights fashinate them.
  
 
 
 
Katanakake(Sword hanger)
Katanakake(Sword hanger) is seen the left side of Nijiriguchi.
Chashitsu is the place where all participants talk frankly and fairly regardless of their status.
So, Bushi(samurai) hangs the Kantana(sword) and enters Nijiriguchi.
  
 
 
 
Ichinoma viewed from Ninoma
Transom window above paper sliding door is composed of hemps and thin bamboos.

  
 
 
 
North side of Ichinoma
Because of outdoor wooden floor, the structure is Soan(thatched hut) style.
There are kitchen stove and sink beside the wooden floor.
Shokintei is surrounded by characteristic flagstones.
This wooden floor is rich in superb views, Gepparo, Amanohashidate and so on.

Check pattern of Husuma(paper sliding door),blue and white, symbolic design of Katsurarikyu.
Washi(Japanese paper) made in Echizen-Kaga are used for Husuma.

  
 
 
 
Stone stove
Stone stove is used for the purpose of cooking and heating of room.


  
 
 
 
View from Ichinoma
The layout is open so that outdoor sights can be seen easily.


  
 
 
 
Structure of Shokintei
In order to show the atmosphere of Soan(thatched hut) in the mountain, materials are used as they are natural and unprocessed.
The pillars are made of log with thick bark.


  
 
 
 
Looking back the path
When lokking back the path, Amanohashidate and Suhama are seen overlapped.

Compared with the sight from opposite side, the garden is ingeniously desined so as to be seen beautiful from any directions.
  
 
 
 
Condensed scenery of Japanese coast
This scenery symbolizes Janpanese coast.
Concerning the ponds, beyond of the island stands for a bay and this side stands for an ocean.
River, bridge, and small stone shore are arranged surround the bay.



  
 
 
 
Site of vermilion-lacquered bridge
Once, there was a vermilion-lacquered bridge with handrail between Shokintei and Kouyou no Baba.

Looking back Shokintei
When looking back Shokintei from Hotaru-bashi,
we realize that tiles are used for apart of roof.
